On the 15th August 2006 around 40 people helped Andrew Crummy create a "Mural In A Day", based on the song "Hey Johnny Cope, are you wauking yet", which depicts the retreat of The English Army at The Battle of Prestonpans.
The mural is painted on a wall looking onto the playground of Prestonpans Primary, which is very near to Bankton House and the actual road where Johnny Cope lead his famous retreat. So the mural is on the very edge of The Battle of Prestonpans site.
The mural features a quote from the song, two copies of cartoons from the reports of the battle at the time, a sketch of famous Thorntree and the romantic version of Bonny Prince Charlie, which most people recognise. Finally the letters "1745", with "17" in a dark brown and "45" in white because many know The Jacobean rising as "The '45".
Before we started painting the wall had been prepared and a sketch had been designed and accepted.
The mural was painted with members of The Summer School and delegates from the Global Mural Arts Council. Most of the members of The Summer school are local residents and from the Global Arts Conference an array of people from all over the US and Canada. We were very lucky to have the inventor of this concept of "A mural in a day" Art Mortimer, who came in the afternoon and helped. The youngest artist was from Prestonpans Primary, Stephen and he helped paint the numbers "1745". WE had teenagers, professional artists, local artists, non artists or rather people who said they were not artists. Most were given a paintbrush and asked to help. During the day all the teachers from the school came out and a few helped.
We started at 9.30 and really had it finished by 4.30. At 5 o'clock around 50 gathered for a champagne launch by Art Mortimer.
It was a lovely day.
