PRESTONGRANGE MAN

In May 2006 over the Bank Holiday Weekend Andrew Crummy created a mural, with help of around 40 children in The Visitors Centre at Prestongrange Museum. The initial brief was a mural, that would involve families as they entered The Visitors centre. Beside the mural were tables where children could draw thier own designs. The initial concept was a black and white miner working down the mine, onto this design the childrens drawing would be incorparated. These ideas would reflect the history of the museum of brick, salt, mining, morrisons harbour, etc. The completed black and white mural would then become part of The Prestoungrange Mural Trail. As the weekend progressed many children of various ages helped, some for a few seconds, others would come back and help for maybe a half hour, some would only do thier own sketches on paper. In many ways it was daunting because it was unstructured and not like working in schools because you just did not know who was going to turn up. Some adults helped too. Some sat and had cups of tea and chatted sometimes about the mural, but more often about life in general. The suggestion came that david Spence should be in the mural, so it came to be. The Museum provided a picture and David Spence (the founder of the museum) was put into the mural.

I have painted the common themes of Coal, Salt, Pottery, etc many times in Prestonpans, but to paint it in the museum, where the artefects were provided a chance not just to replicate what they look like but something more interesting.

The mural was commissioned by East Lothian Council, Museum Services.
